To my family at Oatly – Thank you for the coolest birthday present imaginable.
2 days in the mountains with a crew of a lifetime at Åre Sessions.
I watched live performances by some sick artists, Storken and I DJ’d on a mountain top,
I partied with all old friends and new ones and I had way too little sleep in general…
But sometimes you just gotta say – when in Rome.

The new X6

Just picked up the keys to this beautiful machine.
It truly is such an incredible thing that I get to have this amazing vehicle as my partner.
I sleep in this car, I spend endless hours on our endless roads up here in Scandinavia in this car and
I trust it doubtlessly in heavy weather and on heavy roads.
It is safe, comfortable and very economical only doing only 7 litres per 100km.
Which for a car of this size and power is unheard of.

Thank you BMW, for always having my back.

Only too often do our winter waves break in darkness…
Between 01 and 04am on a February morning, in the midst of a snowstorm;
I paddled out at my home break to ride waves that
on any other night, would go unridden…

More than honoured to be given the freedom by BMW to make real the dream
of capitalising on a midnight swell, we lined up the pier with five new
5 Series with headlights of up to 600 meter range and
lit up the Baltic.

Winter

Winter by all means.
Roads so icy you couldn’t even stand on them.
Closed roads.
Driving all night. Again.
Car was a champ.
I need this.
The importance of these missions.
The relevance.
Will I have enough energy.
Drink water.
And a recovery before you jump in.
“Car park”
Long walk.
Thick forest.
You can hear the waves.
Look up, still trees – no wind.
Clear skies.
Walk faster.
I see the sea.
Lines.
Good lines.
Navigate the ice rocks.
Look up again – almost fall on face.
It’s glassy.
Round the headland.
A set rises from the deep.
We made it.

Ran: the revisit

It’s a unique feeling achieving something you’ve worked hard for. Ok, it wasn’t that big; to be honest it needed a little more to show its true colours, but a great opening day out at Rán nonetheless.

Three months prior to this revisit I had driven all day and all night only to show up to a wave of such magnitude that I could barely surf it. It was a surreal feeling! After all that travelling, there we were sitting on the ski in the channel; way out on some distant archipelago with this brutal but beautiful truth – It was too big for what I had prepared for. That day was still the best that I’ve seen so far out at Rán… The first recon mission ever when you have absolutely no idea what to expect, turns out to be the day of the year.

Our revisit consisted of quite the crew. Quite the random crew that one wouldn’t find every day in this remote corner of Scandinavia.

A raw and turbulent introduction to Rán…

Nic on a mean one. Though with the wretched devil wind, it couldn’t really take to its true form.

I always forget to leave energy and warmth for this part… I pre-heated the car with the
BMW Connected app prior to our return which kept us from tipping over the edge and somewhat capable for the task ahead.

In 50 years Tore and I will still regard this as one of the fondest moments.

My first proper wave at Rán… Special.

Tore was so happy he was having a hard time keeping his emotions together as the morning unfolded.
I think him towing me in to that wave made him happier than it made me.

It was my turn to drive… Tore – rising with the wave.

After everyone was getting exhausted and Tore felt satisfied with the day’s work I decided to go for one more run.
We had just taken a very mediocre wave and were on our way back through the lineup when this thing materialised.
Tore whipped me in from the side so I had to cutback into the wave.
The positioning would’ve been perfect had the wave barrelled.

Queens

It took a 6m swell for this wave to break but I finally got to
experience it for 2 hours before she vanished in true Baltic fashion…
Due to the kind nature of the wave, its beauty, its mysteriousness,
its lure, it’s intensity, the presence I feel in the lineup, and the few rocks that stick up along the ride to
keep you in check should you get too confident… i’ve decided to call the wave Queens.

Rán

That time you get more than what you prepare for.
It was hard to gauge the size from the ski, but my suspicions of being under-gunned
were confirmed once I’d bobbed out to the lineup. I also realised that this wave is one of the
more incredible ones I’ve ever seen in Scandinavia and I can’t wait to go back and put some
hours in this winter. .

My good friend Seth and I called the place Rán after the Norse goddess of the Sea
who was known for capturing sailing men, and in her underwater halls they remained.

Rounding the tip of the island we saw this… Our first glimpse of Rán;
It’s hard to see but this wave is 4+ times overhead.

Waxing up the next step

After scoping in the morning followed by a sleep to recover, I paddled out for the evening session.
The swell had halved in size but still dwarfed my 6’3 and I to the point of barely being able to catch
waves or escape them for that matter. I caught one and made for the ski.
